Learn how to find low competition keywords with high traffic using these 3 advanced tactics.
But first, some background.
Why are low competition keywords are important to find?
I work with many websites that don’t have a lot of domain authority, so I struggle in the search rankings for highly competitive, short-tail keywords.
Even my website can’t rank for “keyword research”,; one of the most competitive niches for digital marketers.
The competition is too tough.
Domain Authority and Keyword Difficulty
The top websites tend to have high domain authority, and many links point to their page about the topic.
Google tend to favour these well-known websites.
Domain authority is a metric that measures the quality and number of links to a website.
Think of these links as votes from other websites.
And keywords and search results with high keyword difficulty tend to feature websites with the most links and domain strength.
Why avoid keywords with a large number of searches
I still need the traffic to my website about a particular topic, so I have to find low competition and easier to rank keyword opportunities.
I’ll show you 3 ways to find low competition keywords
How to find low competition keywords
You will need at least one of these 3 SEO tools.

How to find low competition keywords with Ubersuggest
Go to Ubersuggest
Enter a seed or root keyword in the search box, select your country and hit search
Select view all keywords
Click the filter button, enter 5 in the max box of SEO Difficulty, and press apply.
The lower the number, the lower the SEO difficulty box should give you the lowest competition.
Look down this list of low search difficulty keywords.
The monthly search volume will be low.
Just bear in mind the keyword “ubersuggest vs ahrefs” shows 0 searches a month in both Ahrefs and Ubersuggest, yet my page gets 62 clicks per month.
Click the arrow next to the keyword.
Then on the right side of the screen, look at the SERP (search engine ranking) results.
Your best chance of ranking is to find pages in the top results that have clicked, don’t have many links to their web page and their Domain Score (DS) aren’t all high.

The latter has fewer links pointing to the top 10 results.
How to find low competition keywords with Ahrefs
With an Ahrefs subscription, you have the best keyword research tool and access to more search and click volume data.
When you say low competition, what you mean is low keyword difficulty.
You want to find keywords that are easy to rank on page 1.
Ahrefs measure low keyword difficulty based on the number of page links to the top-ranking pages.
So KD of 5 means your page would need around 5 links to break into page 1.
It’s a good measurement when doing keyword research.
But in reality, I rank at number one for a “local advertising” query with 4 page links for a keyword with a 43 keyword difficulty score.
It’s easy to find more low difficulty keywords with Ahrefs than Ubersuggest, here’s how:
- Go to Ahrefs keyword explorer
- Enter a seed keyword eg: sofa
- Select phrase match
- In the KD filter box enter 0 in the min and 5 in the max box and apply
Look; 7779 keywords with low difficulty.
But how do you find low competition and high traffic keywords?
Consider for a moment that around 50% of searches result in zero clicks.
And then those who do click, those clicks are distributed between positions 1 and 10; and even beyond.
So take this low difficulty keyword; 16,000 searches, 20,781 clicks.
That means the clicks or traffic per month is greater than searches per month.
I.e., low keyword difficulty and high traffic.
Now filter CPS greater than 1 ( greater than 2 if you want to be adventurous).
(you can also filter this keyword list, remove irrelevant keywords, include commercial keywords etc.)
Now you can click the SERP button and see the estimated traffic to the top search engine ranking pages.
You’ll see these pages rank for multiple keywords.
So the top page earns 8159 clicks per month.
This is an excellent example of low competition, high traffic in a world with zero-click searches and featured snippets.
Let’s find another low competition keyword with high traffic
Filter keyword difficulty from 0 to 0.
Filter by CPS; clicks per search
This has 400 searches per month.
Clicks are 792.
Click the SERP button to see an estimate of the traffic to the top search engine ranking pages.
Top pages earn 239 clicks.
Even the average page 1 result earns over 110 clicks per month (excluding result 6)
How to find low competition keyword with Search Console
Search Console provides excellent insights into your pages that rank in Google’s search results and the keywords, position, and clicks you receive.
So it would help if you had a ranking website and existing Search Console with a few months of data to use this approach.
Go to Google Search Console
Next to Performance, click Open Report
Last 28 days from the date filter
Ensure the clicks, impressions, CTR and average position boxes are selected and highlighted, then press pages.
Scroll through your pages until you find a page with a high number of impressions and few clicks.
Click the URL, then queries, then sort by impressions
You’ll need the page to display multiple queries for this approach to work.
Look at the long-tail keyword I’ve highlighted

- 109 impressions
- position 63
- no clicks
then this long-tail keyword.

- 58 impressions
- position 67
As I mentioned earlier, I got 62 high converting clicks from a query with 156 impressions.
So 2 queries with the same number of queries represent a similar opportunity.
I’m ranking for these queries, but my page doesn’t answer the user intent very well; hence positions 67 and 63.
So if I improve my page with more relevant content to better match the search intent or better answer than the page, I, hopefully, have a better chance to earn clicks.
Now improve your content
So how do you improve your content?
I have a process where I diagnose issues with user intent, the copy, and the page’s headers.
- Check the keyword is near the start of the title
- Check the most frequent words in the top page titles
- Check the page format
- Do the 3 point above the fold check
Now analyse the content and headers.
- Compare your page copy with the other top pages.
- Compare the headers on your page with the top pages to see if you’re missing any relevant sections on your page.
- Now add additional content to fill in these missing gaps.
This is from what I’d call a low competition, high traffic opportunity.
